why does

kinship matter?

Kinship de-colonizes our relationship with Mother Earth. For those of us raised with colonial mind this is a radical change for Nature and the Nature that we are.

Every one of us is a collection of many. Our human body is a community of more microbes than human cells, 200 to 1, surrounded by water. The same water that falls as rain, flows as river, and through faucet.

No one is an individual. This is a modern concept. We are intimately entangled with other life forms for our very survival.

Ocean plankton provide most of the air we breathe, microorganisms in our gut influence our digestion and health, the plants and/or animals we eat daily, the plants who feed the animals, and the sun and soil who feed the plants. None of us could do life on our own, not even termites, they have gut bacteria too (thank you Lynn Margulis)! We are all made of each other.

Kinship recognizes our entangled-ness. We stand shoulder to shoulder and eye to eye with our more-than-human-kin.

We learn beyond their anatomy and physiology, nutrition, and ecological role, and recognize their wisdom of living and evolving on our shared planet for billions of years before our human ancestors, and our co-evolution with them for millions of years.

They are our teachers as we remember to listen.

As Audre Lorde said, “for the master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house.” and Einstein, “we cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

As we listen to voices that are not our own, we grow our hearts and capacity to change how we think, for the benefit of all beings.

We must listen to Indigenous voices that have always been and still are informed by Nature. We must remember how to listen to the voices of Nature herself and act accordingly.

Marilyn Strathern, anthropologist, said, “it matters what ideas we use to think other ideas” and Donna Haraway, professor and researcher of consciousness, continues this line of thought with, “it matters what stories we tell to tell other stories with; it matters what concepts we think to think other concepts with.”

From a place of kinship, we will be better informed and have greater courage to act rightly for Nature.

What happens to them happens to us and what happens to us happens to them.

What happens to them happens to us and what happens to us happens to them.

What happens to them happens to us and what happens to us happens to them.

We can and we must do this.

We can and we must do this.
